There are places in our world where fiction and dreams can come true.

Alan Wake
Episode 1: Nightmare

"Stephen King once wrote that 'Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there's little fun to be had in explanations; they're antithetical to the poetry of fear.' In a horror story, the victim keeps asking 'why?' But there can be no explanation, and there shouldn't be one. The unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest, and it's what we'll remember in the end. My name is Alan Wake. I'm a writer."

Haunted by a nightmare of a powerful and dark force, Alan stirs to find his smiling wife beside him and his vacation in Bright Falls just beginning. With his hope to stay under the radar dashed, the writer collects his rental key from a mysterious woman claiming to be stepping in for the caretaker.

While the cabin itself is situated on a calming lake, the evening is far from relaxing. As they unpack, Alice reveals her true hope for the vacation: a way for Alan to overcome his writer's block, with professional assistance from a local psychiatrist. Furious by her intervention, Alan storms out into the night, knowing her fear of the dark will keep her inside. As he catches his breath, a piercing scream leads him running back to his wife. He walks back through the cabin to the water's edge, where he sees her form below the water. He jumps in after her.

Moments later, Alan wakes up behind the wheel of a crashed car, his head bleeding. With his mobile out of power, he stumbles from the wreck and follows the path down to the gas station below, hoping to find a telephone. Reaching a logging site, Alan witnesses a Stucky, the local mechanic, covered in dark shadows pulling an axe from a body. He turns, brandishing it towards the writer and chases him into a nearby office. Armed with a flashlight and revolver, Alan moves deeper into the forest in a bid to reach the welcoming lights of the gas station. Pressed, he faces off against an army of Taken, locals who had been possessed by some kind of dark presence, ultimately with a showdown with Stucky himself. The name of the entity, the Dark Presence, he discovers through a series of mysterious light-sensitive messages painted across his path.

As he reaches the safe, familiar lights of the gas station, he sees the Deerfest float that had driven past on his arrival in Bright Falls. A poster celebrating the event's countdown reveals that a whole week has passed since his arrival. Shaken, he calls the local sheriff's station.

Arriving at the Bright Falls Gas Station, Sheriff Sarah Breaker finds the exhausted writer. In desperation, he explains about the car crash, his wife's disappearance, and that the two of them were vacationing at Diver's Isle. Cautiously, Breaker informs him that the island was lost in the volcanic eruption in the 1970s. In a bid to convince her, they drive to the shore, where Alan finds the empty waters of Cauldron Lake.

NOTE: Mysteries are at the heart of the Alan Wake series. To avoid spoilers, we keep episode descriptions self-contained unless they are included under broader categories such as "Ties to the Remedy Connected Universe" and "Ties to Later Events".

Characters Introductions

Main Characters

Alan Wake
(alt names: Bestseller, Al, Tom)
Alan Wake, a bestselling author from New York, escapes to Bright Falls on vacation with his wife, Alice, hoping to escape the hectic city life. Burdened with the high-stakes pressure of his public life, he has struggled with fame and depression. He hasn't been able to write a word since his last book, The Sudden Stop, two years ago. Over the years, his writing has become a burden, and he's found himself overwhelmed by expectation and "overeager fans".

Initially haunted by the nightmare he had on the ferry to the coastal town, his dream of ominous dark forces and a deadly car crash drifted away with the warm sunset and gentle waves. He collects the keys from a local, standing in for the caretaker, and drives with his wife to Bird Leg Cabin. After discovering that Alice had arranged the vacation to overcome his writer's block, complete with assistance from a local psychiatrist, Alan storms out of the cabin to get his breath. Her screams call him back in, and noticing the broken fence outside, he discovers her body under the waves. He jumps in after her.

Awaking a week later behind the seat of his crashed car, Alan escapes moments before it falls off a cliff. With his phone battery dead, he walks through the woods at night, in an attempt to reach Stucky's Gas Station. As he makes his way down the forest paths, he discovers loose sheets of paper from a manuscript entitled "Departure", with himself listed as the author. He changes his destination, reassured by the lights at a nearby logging yard. After his first encounter with the Taken, an entity which had turned Stucky, and a failed attempt to reach the sheriff station, he readjusts his sights on the gas station. Threatened by locals corrupted by the dark entity, Alan is forced to use a nearby revolver, an act which leaves him shaken. Until then, his experience has been purely on a shooting range. The skills would be forced to be used again, deeper into the night, in an ultimate showdown with Stucky.

As he reaches the gas station, he's able to reach the Sheriff's Station. When Sarah Breaker arrives, he explains the crash, intentionally omitting the events in the forest. As he explains that they were staying at the cabin of Cauldron Lake, he learns that the island there has sunk following the eruption in the 70s.

The Anderson brothers will mistakenly refer to Alan as "Tom" on occasions when they're alone.

The Hitchhiker
A character seemingly from Alan's novel. Described only as "The Hitchhiker", this individual meets a swift death in the opening scene, hit by Alan's car as it speeds through a tunnel. He is already dead before hitting the tarmac. The body is gone as Alan goes to check on him, only to return reanimated to haunt the writer as he snakes his way through the mountainous paths towards the Lighthouse. The character has a personal grudge against him, hitting at his insecurities and claiming to be a character from a story he had written. After Clay Steward tries to help Alan escape, the Hitchhiker emerges just paces away and delivers a deadly blow with his axe, with Alan unable to do anything but watch. With nightmare logic, he has the ability to transform into deadly hurricanes, crossing over spaces where destroyed paths block his way.

Clay Steward
A saviour in Alan's dream, Clay Steward becomes the unfortunate victim of the Hitchhiker's war path. Adorned in his Bright Falls university varsity tracksuit, Clay attempts to face down the attacker, but realises that the gun is jammed just moments too late.

Thomas Zane
(alt names: TZ, Tom, The Poet)
A mysterious guide from Alan's nightmare, Thomas Zane, helps Alan prepare for the horrors waiting for him in Bright Falls and how to harm the Taken. In real life, Zane is a published author, with poetry books securely packaged inside a shoebox at Bird Leg Cabin. The Anderson brothers will mistakenly refer to Alan as "Tom" on occasions when they're alone.

Alice Wake
Alice is a professional photographer and the wife of Alan Wake.  She struggles with nyctophobia, a fear of the dark, a fear that makes her cautious and prepared. She arranges the vacation to Bright Falls, hoping it would help break his writing block. Unbeknownst to Alan, she packs his typewriter and a pad of paper, in case Alan is later inspired by the lakeside retreat. Ahead of the vacation, she had reached out to local psychiatrist, Dr Emil Hartman, after reading his book, The Artist's Dilemma. Following an argument, Alan storms out of Bird Leg Cabin, and alone in the house, Alice is kidnapped. He rushes back in after hearing her screams and sees her form beneath the waves. A week later, Alan discovers that she, along with Diver's Isle, has disappeared.

Pat Maine
Best known for his radio show, The Night Owl, Pat Maine is a welcoming face to Bright Falls. As an avid reader, he instantly recognises Alan Wake, taking the time to talk to him. He tries his luck and gently asks for an interview, respectfully backing away when it's turned down, but promising to keep his holiday secret. He informs the couple that they're in town in time for Deerfest, which will provide a central event throughout the game. Throughout the adventure, Alan will have the opportunity to tune in to local radio shows, learning more about local events, such as navigation tips for cityfolk and lost-dog appeals.

Barry Wheeler
Barry Wheeler is Alan Wake's literary agent and long-time best friend. He is incredibly protective of his client, and calls as the ferry docks, reassuring them he's only a plane journey away.

Rose Marigold
A waitress at the Oh Deer Diner, in the coastal town of Bright Falls, with a passion for Alex Casey books. Her love of the books led to her taking The Sudden Stop promotional cardboard standee from the local bookstore for the diner. Though she initially keeps her cool, she slips into mild flirting, asking whether his wife is with him on his trip and whether he wants her to show them around town. A week prior, Cynthia warned her to change the bulbs at the back of the diner, though they eventually burned out. Later that evening, she calls into the local radio, KBF-FM, show to share the news that she saw Alan Wake at her diner.

Rusty
Employed as a park ranger, Rusty is seen at the Oh Deer Diner's bar, reading the Bright Falls Record newspaper. He loves the coffee blend the diner uses, comparing it to the "poison" at the park cafe. Or maybe it's the waitress that he's eager to see?

Odin Anderson
One half of "The Anderson Brothers" and one fourth of the heavy metal band Old Gods of Asgard, Odin lives a quieter life these days. After escaping from his current residence at Cauldron Lake Lodge, he takes some time to hang out with his brother at the Oh Deer Diner, making the request of passersby for his favourite track, "Coconut, number six in the jukebox". His physical health has sometimes been a hindrance, with him blaming bad circulation for his legs falling asleep if sitting for too long, and later a hernia for his exhaustion. Odin is perhaps the most recognisable of the two brothers, with a black eye patch over his right eye following an incident forty years earlier. He mistakenly refers to Alan as "Tom".

Tor Anderson
The other half of "The Anderson Brothers" and one-fourth of the heavy metal band Old Gods of Asgard, Tor pretends to be more absent than he is. After escaping from the Cauldron Lake Lodge, he and his brother, Odin, spend some time at the Oh Deer Diner waiting to be collected. He barely tolerates Odin's music tastes, feeling that he has lost his "rocker" edge. He mistakenly refers to Alan as "Tom".

Cynthia Weaver
(alt names: The Lamp Lady, The Log Lady)
A local of Bright Falls, Cynthia Weaver spends her days ensuring that the lights around town are kept bright and working. Though she warned Rose about the bulbs in the corridor a week prior, they have now burnt out. Just ahead of the Wakes' arrival in town, she catches up with Carl Stucky and warns him not to enter the dark corridor, though he decides to ignore her. When Alan first meets her, she is cautiously staring down the same dark corridor leading to the bathrooms. She encourages Alan not to venture, as "you can hurt yourself in the dark." In her arms, she is clutching a gas lamp. Absntmindedly, she plans out loud to stop by the Bright Falls Sheriff Department to remind Sarah Breaker to replace those lights

Carl Stucky
Carl Stucky is the owner of Stucky's Gas Station and a series of cabins around Bright Falls. Alice had booked a lodge with him before the couple travelled to Bright Falls. Ahead of their arrival at their agreed meeting place, the Oh Deer Diner, Stucky takes a moment to go to the bathrooms at the back of the building. Cynthia warns him not to go down the corridor, fearing the burnt-out light bulbs and darkened room, though he ignores her. As he enters the darkness, his mind is drawn into the Dark Presence. He goes into the bathroom and locks the door until the Wakes have collected their keys for Bird Leg Cabin from Barbara Jagger and drives away. With his mind now released from the Dark Presence's grip, he rushes out of the diner with the keys in an attempt to catch them. A week later, the Dark Presence returns again while he works on a car in the gas station's garage. Now fully Taken, he stumbles into the forest, armed with an axe,

In his past life, he loved a good hot dog and praised Paul Rudolph for making the best he'd ever eaten, claiming the top three to be The Belly Buster, Monster Dog, and The Famous Dog, in that order. Though he has views against a salad, claiming that "a man like me needs a hefty meal to get through the day." He was a friend to Maurice Horton's dog, Toby, always making sure to give him snacks and play with him whenever he saw him.

Barbara Jagger
(alt names: BJ, Scratching Hag)
Barbara Jagger initially appears to Alan as a replacement for Stucky, who had just been taken ill. Wearing a morning gown, she hands him the keys and instructions for how to get to the lake. In parting words, she wishes him a good stay in her cabin and insists on checking on the two later.

Sheriff Sarah Breaker
After hearing about the call at Stucky's Gas Station, Sarah Breaker drives out to investigate, discovering an injured Alan Wake at the site. Cautiously, he approaches him, explaining after he reveals where they were staying that "There's no island on Cauldron Lake, not since the big eruption in the seventies." As he collapses to the pavement, she notices the gash on his head and reassures him that they'll figure it out. They take him to the station, but swing by the lake.

Minor Characters

Ben Mott
Dressed in camouflage overalls and wearing a baseball hat, Mott is easy to miss as he faces away from the action. Keeping to himself, he lights up a smoke at the back of the ferry, muttering about Alan.

Dr. Emil Hartman
The head physiatrist and owner of the Cauldron Lake Lodge, a creative residency for artists. Alice had previously reached out to him before travelling to Bright Falls, in the hope of helping Alan overcome his writer's block. He is a published author of the self-help book The Artist's Dilemma.  He returns to the town after Alan departs the Oh Deer Diner to collect the two Anderson brothers who slipped from his care.

Maurice Horton
A Bright Falls resident and dog owner who loses his friend Toby while out on a walk through the forest. Concerned, he called into the local radio show to spread the word about Toby's disappearance.

Toby the Dog
An unfortunate victim of the Dark Presence. Toby ran away from his owner, Maurice Horton, while on a walk, likely chasing a rabbit in the undergrowth. While lost, he discovered Stucky, who had recently been taken over by the Dark Presence. Unaware of the threat, he ran over in the hopes of snacks and playtime, realising too late that the human smell wasn't right.

Paul Randolph
Stucky, under the influence of the Dark Presence, boasts about the delicious hot dogs Paul makes, listing the Belly Burster, Monster Dog, and The Famous Dog as his top three.

Montgomery the Mystic

A magician performing Montgomery the Mystic's Amazing Phantasmagoria during the Deerfest evenings.

Locations & Importance to Chapter

Night Springs, Coastal Paths. A dark coastal town, mirroring Bright Falls. The area features tight mountain roads, hiking trails, old bunkers, and a lighthouse. Fog covers the paths, clearing only at the lighthouse.

Rain Cove Lighthouse. A potential refuge for Alan in his dream, Rain Cove Point Lighthouse is a simple structure situated at the coast, connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge. The building is made of brick, painted white, and protected by a burgundy metal roof. Tall windows spill light through the dark. The area is lined with a neat picket fence along the border, with stair access to the front. Inside, the entrance way is kept simple, with exposed beams and a stone floor. A long metal spiral staircase ascending to the light above. (Learn More)

Bright Falls Town. A small fishing town located on the coast. Packed with all the essentials you would need. The town is intimate, where everyone knows everyone.

Oh Deer Diner. Seemingly the heart of the community in Bright Falls, the Oh Deer Diner offers delicious coffee and a place to relax in the evenings or prepare for the new day. Inspired by the Double R Diner in Twin Peaks, the Oh Deer Diner, with its wood panelling and booths, captures a familiar homey style. As Alan and Alice drive to Bird Leg Cabin, Alan describes the gathering there as "a real nuthouse".

Bird Leg Cabin. Situated in the middle of Diver's Isle, Bird Leg Cabin got its name from the shape of the island, mirroring a giant bird's leg. The island itself sits in the middle of a caldera, atop a dormant volcano. (Learn More)

Cauldron Lake Lodge. Formerly a hotel, the lodge rests at the edge of the caldera and is now privately owned by Doctor Emil Hartman.

Biltmore Logging Company. Owners of a series of logging sites around Bright Falls. While cautionary signs are planted around the locations, heavy machinery is often left accessible, and fences are destroyed by fallen trees.

Sparkling River Estates. Described by Stucky as the key location to go to if you're looking for something special to eat.

Music
  1. Coconut by Harry Nilsson. Requested by Odin Anderson at the Oh Deer Diner. It's number six on the jukebox.

  2. In Dreams by Roy Orbison. Played in two locations: 1) as the Wakes arrive at Diver's Isle to mark the crossing of the threshold, and 2) as the chapter end song.

  3. Air Kissing by Violet IndianaPlayed at the end of the radio show, A Famous Deerfest Guest

  4. Up Jumped The Devil by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Played at the end of the radio show, Have You Seen This Dog?

Collectables & Achievements

Manuscript Pages

Coffee Thermoses
  • Coffee Thermos 1/100 - At the start of the game, instead of following the Rain Cove Point Hiking Trail, follow the road. At the end, Alan will come across a sheltered bridge. Go past the road barricades, and you will find the first coffee thermos on a wooden panel in front of the broken planks. [Easy]

  • Coffee Thermos 2/100 - In the nightmare, after collecting the Flare gun from the cache, follow the path to a lit concrete bunker. Avoid dropping down onto the level below as Alan will be unable to climb back up. Instead, investigate the bunker and discover the second thermos inside. [Easy]

  • Coffee Thermos 3/100 - The third and final thermos in the nightmare sequence can be found outside the lighthouse on a wooden bench. While there's the pressure of the ever-approaching tornado, take a moment to explore the area in front. Instead of turning left for the entrance, turn right for the thermos. [Easy]

  • Coffee Thermos 4/100 - Perhaps one of the easiest locations in the game, the fourth coffee thermos is located at the back of the Oh Deer Diner. Alan will have to walk past it on his way to talk to Stucky. [Very Easy]

  • Coffee Thermos 5/100 - After the Wakes arrive to Diver's Isle, a fifth coffee thermos can be found if Alan backtracks up the mountain trail instead of crossing the bridge. There is also an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the island's bird claw shape. Though it's a bit of a trek, it's worth the excursion. [Medium]

  • Coffee Thermos 6/100 - Alan can enter Bird Leg Cabin at two opportunities: ahead of getting the generator running, and later as part of the story to see Alice. You can collect this thermos at either time. Simply head into the kitchen and grab the thermos from the counter. [Very Easy]

  • Coffee Thermos 7/100 - While quick to collect, you'll need a calm mindset. After discovering Stucky in the logging site, you will see a yellow machine in front of you, and near to where the body is. Walk past the machine, and there will be a thermos waiting for you near a parked truck.   [Medium]

  • Coffee Thermos 8/100 - Simple to get but easy to miss. After Alan admits that he doesn't want to see the water, he will be forced to use a fallen tree trunk to cross the stream. After stepping off the tree, the game will want you to go right, but you're going to want to turn left . Keep heading in that direction, as far as you can go, to find the thermos.  [Medium]

  • Coffee Thermos 9/100 -The ninth thermos can be found at the far end of the second logging site. Head to where the suspended log pile is, and look to your right. The thermos is on the rock nearby.  [Medium]

  • Coffee Thermos 10/100 - After heading up the hill after the second logging site, Alan will make the comment, "The gas station was closer now, its lights welcoming in the darkness". In the distance, you can see the white and red lights. Head to the cliff edge to collect the tenth thermos.  [Medium]

  • Coffee Thermos 11/100 - If you're going through the game again to collect all 100 thermoses, this is likely one you've missed. After Alan comments that the gas station is closer now, you'll want to follow the path into the woods. There will be a generator you'll need to power along the way. Take a few seconds to collect your bearings and the nearby batteries. Ignore the UI compass at the top, and head down the hill until you get to the cliff edge. Explore left until you find the thermos. It's tucked away behind a barrel, but watch out; two Taken are sneaking up on you. [Hard]

  • Coffee Thermos 12/100 - After taking down Taken-Stucky and his minions, take a moment to catch your breath. There won't be any more heading in your direction any time soon. Locate the large yellow crane by the exit gate and head over to take the coffee thermos from the tracks.  [Medium]

  • Coffee Thermos 13/100 - When you get to Stucky's Gas Station, don't head in straight away. Instead, head over to the price boards in front of you and collect the coffee thermos at the base of the signs.  [Medium]

  • Coffee Thermos 14/100 - The fourteen thermos is a tricky one! When you arrive at Stucky's Gas Station, head to the road and turn left. Keep following it until you reach a lorry blocking the entrance to the tunnel. A traffic nightmare, but a perfect opportunity to nab an extra thermos. You will find it near the passenger side door. Watch out, though! Three waves of Taken will be after you, so stay alert. Feel free to use your good weapons for them; you're near the end of the episode anyway.  [Hard]

Radio Shows
  • A Famous Deerfest Guest 1/11 - When the Wakes arrive at Cauldron Lake, you have the option to explore the house on two different occasions: before turning on the power generator and before heading upstairs to see Alice's surprise. If you head to the back porch with incredible views over the water, you will find a radio by the steps [Easy]
Music: Air Kissing by Violet Indiana

  • Have You Seen This Dog? 2/11 The radio can be found inside a small, rundown shack next to a street lamp. The small wooden building is directly next to the light, so you can't miss it when you're taking a breather. During this time, your goal will read "Get to the Gas Station". [Easy]
Music: Up Jumped The Devil by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Night Springs TV Shows & Writer In The Cabin
  • Night Springs - Quantum Suicide 1/6 - Ahead of the final showdown with Taken-Stucky, Alan will have the opportunity to gear up ahead of opening the metal gate into the third logging yard. On the table in the cabin is the first TV show, Quantum Suicide[Easy]

  • Writer in the Cabin 1/7 - Collected as part of the story. As Alan enters Stucky's Gas Station and comments on the destruction, the TV near the doorway bursts to life.

Tin Can Pyramid (Carny Achievement)
  • Can Pyramid #1 - After escaping the cabin, Alan will be shown how to defend himself against the Taken, receiving both a flashlight and a revolver. For the tutorial, the player will have access to a wooden crate, filled to the brim with ammo. After defeating the Taken, explore the wooden fence behind and slightly left of the box. [Easy]

  • Can Pyramid #2 - After using the suspended log pile to act as a makeshift bridge, turn right where the stairs should have been. There will be a pile of cans on the table.  [Easy]

Signs & Notices
  • 68th Annual Deerfest Poster - Placed inside Stucky's Gas Station, The 68th Annual Deerfest gears shoppers up for four days of local celebration featuring fishing, live music, magicians, and competitions.

Hidden Crates
.
"Eerie han-painted graffiti was revealed by my flashlight. Someone had hidden a chest of supplies near it."
  • Hidden Crate #1 - After escaping the cabin and Stucky, a nearby gate will blow open. Don't get distracted by the ambush. Take down the Taken, then head to the left side of the storage shed. Arrows painted with light-sensitive paint will lead the way. [Easy]
Look Out For: Stucky driving the cabin off the cliff. (To be fair, you're in it, so it's hard to miss.)

  • Hidden Crate #2 - After reaching the second logging site, with the destroyed steps, you're going to want to go back to where you entered the area. You will see a caution sign. Instead of turning right, you're going to want to turn left. Follow the path to a tree stump, and use the ladder on your left to climb up. Follow the path, and go inside the dilapidated barn. [Medium]
Look Out For: The second logging area.

  • Hidden Crate #3. The third hidden crate is placed immediately after you find the radio broadcast warning Bright Fall residents to keep an eye out for Toby, a missing dog. This radio is on the main path, in a wooden shed next to a street lamp, so pretty easy to stumble across. What you'll need to do is go behind the shed. Once you see the wooden shelter and rusted car, you'll know exactly where to go. Head under the shelter to collect the third storage crate. [Easy]
Look Out For: The radio about Toby the dog.

  • Hidden Crate #4 - After getting through the woods, Alan will drop down on a dirt road where Taken-Stucky taunts him from the darkness. If he's talking about his hatred of salad, you're going to want to turn left and head up the hill. When you get to the blocked gate, turn right and follow the rocky edge.  [Medium]
Look Out For: Stucky's anti-salad protest.

Weapons & Inventory Items
  • Flare Gun - Found in the nightmare and later in each of the four hidden crates in the episode. Best kept until the final showdown with Stucky.

  • Shotgun - Discovered in the cabin ahead of the final showdown with Taken-Stucky. You will find it on the shelves next to the TV, along with some shotgun ammo. By collecting both, you will have twelve shots overall and a major leg up on the next fight.

QR Codes (PC 2012 & Remastered)

In Alan Wake Remastered, the QR Codes were revised from the 2012 PC edition, where they had originally appeared. In the 2012 version, they sent players to memes and official links, but with the Remastered edition, the team revisited those link opportunities to connect their adventures.
  • QR Code #1

Location: After meeting the hitchhiker for the first time, you will have to walk down two sets of wooden staircases to escape from him. At the bottom of the two staircases is a notice board with the first code

    2012 Image: Screenshot
2012: Message: The code sends the player to the Official Alan Wake Facebook Page

    Remastered Message: Vision 01

Details & Tidbits
  • Broken Car. If the player investigates the car after the crash, Alan will say that "The radiator had broken when I hit the hitchhiker. The car wasn't going anywhere."

  • Blocked Tunnel. If the player chooses to go back and investigate the tunnel, they will find a brick wall. Surprised, Alan will reflect, "I was certain that I had just driven from this direction, but now the road was blocked."

  • Diver Suit Photograph. Before his official introduction, Alan will see a photograph of Thomas Zane in his diver's suit on the community notice board alongside the first QR code.

  • Guardian Role. For Alan Wake, James McCaffrey (the voice of Max Payne) returned to work with the studio, this time giving a voice to Thomas Zane. Characters voiced by James McCaffrey from Alan Wake onwards usually have a guardian role in the Remedy Connected Universe: Thomas Zane in Alan Wake, Director Zachariah Trench in Control, and Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2

  • The Deer is Dear to Me. If Alan stays at the Oh Deer Diner, the Anderson brothers will sign the unofficial Deerfest anthem, "the deer is dear to me, the deer is dear to me, the deer is dear to me, in more ways than one". Rose seems a little embarrassed in front of her role model, and clarifies that it's not an actual anthem.

  • Disappearance Act. If Alan returns to the dark corridor after Cynthia comments, "You were lucky this time, young man", he will note that the woman is gone. "I hadn't seen her leave, but the old lady was gone." In the 2010 version of the game, Barbara's shadow will still be visible on the floor.

  • Bright Falls Record. Rusty's newspaper, the Bright Falls Record, is the same publication mentioned in the Bright Falls miniseries, which Ellen works for as a reporter.

  • Diver's Isle. Situated in the middle of a caldera, Diver's Isle is likely named after its inhabitants, Thomas Zane. A photograph of him on the docks before a dive is available in the study. Also trapped in the Dark Place, Zane appears to Alan throughout the adventure in an old diving suit.

  • Bird Leg Cabin & Barbara Jagger. Built on Diver's Isle is Bird Leg Cabin. While the name is likely more closely tied in-game to the island's bird-claw shape, Remedy also drew inspiration from Slavic folklore and the tale of Baba Yaga for the game's main antagonist, Barbara Jagger. (In Finland, Js are pronounced as Ys, so with Finnish pronunciation, Jagger sounds closer to Yaga.) In the tale, Baba Yaga is a witch who terrorises the woods, prowling around in a cabin raised up on large chicken legs. The cabin's movement was an aspect explored during the game's development, but eventually had to be scrapped due to the amount of technology and work needed. Though the cabin's style still resembles that of a bird, complete with circular windows for eyes, feather-shaped wooden panelling, a fireplace beak, and covered porches resembling wings.

A fallen tree bears the engraved initials "T.Z + B.J" enclosed in a heart. Upon inspection, Alan comments that "the island had once been the site for a love story. Maybe it would be that again." an insight that he viewed the vacation as a way of mending bridges following a turbulent past few years.

  • Private Island. When the Wakes arrive on Diver's Isle, Alice shares her concerns after taking the view in. If Alan stays with her, she will turn to him and "Are you sure you read the directions right? It's nothing like in the brochure. It said near the lake, not on it. Don't get me wrong, this is so much better. It's wonderful! Our own private island." It's an early indication that things aren't quite right with the planned vacation.

  • A Murder of Crows. As Alan makes his way across the bridge to Diver's Isle, he'll disturb a handful of crows resting on the handrail and notice several more taking up residency in nearby trees. While a foreboding sign, the birds are also the only animal in Alan Wake that are possessed by the Dark Presence, although Remedy did explore with alternative creatures during development, such as bears and wolves.

  • Thomas Zane, the Poet. In the living room in Bird Leg Cabin, there will be a series of five books in a shoebox written by Thomas Zane. Though you can't see the fifth title, the other books are The Labyrinth of Me, The Temple of Shadow and Mist, In Her Dreams to Prevail, and Kept From Sleep.

  • The Oppressive Feeling. If Alan enters Bird Leg Cabin before the power comes on, Alice will stay outside due to her fear of the dark. As Alan turns on his flashlight, he will hear loud footsteps upstairs and instinctively call out, "Hello, anyone here?" When he enters the upstairs study, Alan will get an intrusive vision of Barbara Jagger approaching him.

  • 1970s Calendar. The calendar in the bedroom at Bird Leg cabin reads July 1970; however, the first of the month is marked as a Sunday instead of its actual day of Wednesday. The year will become important later in the game, as it marks when the cabin was submerged.

  • Foreshadowing Is A Literary Technique. The listing for the manuscript page, "Wake Attacked by a Shadowy Murderer", is visible in the manuscript menu before it's revealed that he is the hero in the story.

  • Taken-Stucky Timeline. Though Carl Stucky was under the influence of the Dark Presence, he likely didn't get completely taken over until the night that Wake finds himself behind the wheel of the crashed car and encounters him. In a later manuscript page, Stucky Taken, we learn that he was at the gas station when the Dark Presence took hold, though he later makes his way to the woods. As he walked through, he likely encountered Toby, a dog that had run away from his owner.

  • Look Down Below! As Alan traverses through the woods, Stucky will occasionally taunt him from the shadows. At one section, Alan will need to drop down to the road below to continue his journey to the gas station. When Stucky talks about his hatred of salad, the player can walk up the hill instead of following the path down. If you ignore the game's direction (maybe to get that forth hidden crate), a series of rocks will fall from the cliff on the left.

  • Dual Flare Guns? In the fourth hidden crate, discovered just ahead of the final showdown with Taken-Stucky, Alan will discover two Flare Guns. Any additional Flare Guns will count towards Fire Gun Ammo, so you'll still get a reward for picking them up. However, it's easy to imagine Alan doing his best Alex Casey/Max Payne impression ahead of the showdown. This is the only crate with two of the same weapon in the episode.

  • Tony Elias Cameo. The live-action portions of Night Springs were recorded by Microsoft. As a result, you may see some familiar faces from that studio. In this episode. Tony Elias can be seen in the audience. He worked closely with the narrative team during Alan Wake and Quantum Break as Microsoft's Game Editor / Writer. (Source: Alan Wake Forums)

  • Episode Rewatch. As the voice-over and live-action segments were recorded separately, Remedy was reluctant to share HQ versions of the TV shows. Due to community interest, the shows were initially released via Joystiq (now closed) to celebrate the Night Springs-themed game, Alan Wake's American Nightmare.
  • It's So Beautiful. If you look closely at the overhead lights, you can see moths attacking the bulbs.

  • Working Overtime. Alan can turn off the log cutter at the entrance to the episode's boss fight. It doesn't do anything, but it's nice to conserve electricity in this economy.

  • Taking Down The Boss. The best way to take out Taken-Stucky is by using a Flare Gun, obtained by one of the four hidden crates across the episode. It only takes two hits to take him down this way. The second best way is to use the shotgun; fellow inventory hoarders may argue you need it for later battles, but you're going to want to use it now.

  • Stucky's Gas Station. The ransacked gas station is explained in the manuscript page "Stucky Taken" found outside next to the parade float. Alan can see the oil stain on the floor mentioned on the page. "Stucky looked up and stared as his brain tried in vain to process the horror before him. He stumbled back, knocking over a can of oil; a black pool spread across the floor while he struggled for a brief moment, then let go as the unrelenting darkness engulfed him."

  • Breaker's Farm Apples. A sign for Breaker's Farm Apples hangs above Stucky's Gas Station, a possible relative of Sarah Breakers?

Changes in PC & Remastered Editions
  • Tom the Poet. During the nightmare, Alan will run into a cabin in the hopes of escaping the hitchhiker. On the back of the door in the cabin, there's a poster of Tom the Poet ahead of the character's introduction. In the original edition, the poster features an image of the diver in the old suit, light beaming out of the window ports and illuminating the dark navy darkness around him. In the bottom-right corner, the line reads in elegant font: "A pinprick of light in an ocean of darkness."

In the Remastered edition, the pose of the diver remains the same, but recreated as a film poster with bold colours mirroring a printing press design. The text reads, "A Terrifyingly Strange Dive... into the Dark Depths... of an Artist's Mind. A film by Thomas Zane. Tom the Poet. A pinprick of light in an ocean of darkness! Starring Thomas Zane as the Diver. Barbara Jagger as the Dark Presence. Cynthia Weaver as the Lady of the Light. Emil Hartman as The Assistant. Written and Directed by Thomas Zane. Based on a Novel by Alan Wake. A Dark Place and Not A Lake Production."

  • The Wake's Car. In their journey from the ferry to Cauldron Lake, the Wakes use a different car depending on whether the game is the original or the remaster. In the original, they drive a dark red Lincoln MKT. It's a luxury SUV manufactured by Ford and released in 2010. On the dashboard is a screen with a logo reading "Microsoft Sync", a feature of the model.

In Alan Wake Remastered, the car has been subtly changed. Instead, the dark red SUV now has a split grill, a softer-shaped hood and a black license plate.

  • Oh Deer Diner Community Noticeboard. At the Oh Deer Diner, there's a corkboard on the back wall, filled with A4 documents pinned up. Likely to be a community board, the player will notice it more due to the coffee thermos collectable resting on the table in front.

In Alan Wake Remastered, most of the documents have been rearranged and now feature leaflets of different sizes and formats. On the top right corner is an advertisement for AHMA Beer next to a poster for Coffee World, "Coming Soon". Both the beverage and the theme park will be featured prominently in Alan Wake 2. A further advertisement can be found by the door at Stucky's Gas Station.

  • Barbara Jagger's Ring. As Barbara Jagger hands over the key and instructions, there are some subtle differences between the original 2010 version and the remastered. In the original, her fingers are bare, with a slight, almost moonlight glow on her skin.

In Alan Wake Remastered, the light is more minimal, highlighting the veins on the back of her hand, but that's not all. In this version, Barbara is also wearing a rather ornate ring on her middle finger. The thing seems to have a large jewel at the top and a decorative base. When the game resumes, her hands are crossed, hiding the ring.

  • Zane's Books. In the original release, Thomas Zane's poetry anthologies in the shoebox are covered in brown cardboard with a neutral-coloured spine and simple white text.

In Alan Wake Remastered, the books have been given plain black covers, though the spine details remain unchanged.

  • Energizer Batteries. In the original 2010 (Xbox 360) and 2012 (PC) editions of the game, Remedy had a brand deal with Energiser, a US battery manufacturer, to help them recover some of the development costs. As Alan relies on his trusty flashlight and revolver throughout the experience, the deal saw Alan use Energizer batteries. An early close-up of the item takes place after Stucky chases the writer into a nearby cabin.

In Alan Wake Remastered, the packaging isn't tied to any real-world brand.

Influences, References & Connections
  • "Stephen King once wrote..." In the introduction, Alan quotes Stephen King: "Nightmares exist outside of logic, and there is little fun to be had in explanations; they're antithetical to the poetry of fear."  The quotation comes from an article he wrote for Entertainment Weekly

  • L. Jenkins. The ferry to Bright Falls passes a large wooden building with a rather interesting sign on the left. Painted in white is the name "L.Jenkins" referring to the World of Warcraft video in which someone, after missing the battle plan, runs into an ambush screaming the name. While a funny gaming-related meme, there's an undertone that Alan is rushing, unbeknownst to him, into his own ambush.

  • Rose's Outfit. In the hopes of collecting the cabin keys from Stucky, Alan heads into the Oh Deer Diner where he is instantly recognised by the waitress, Rose Marigold. In a trailer shown two years earlier, Rose looked very different; with striking black hair, a gentler, rounder face, and a blue uniform. The older teal uniform more closely resembles used by the waitresses at the Double R Diner in Twin Peaks, a show whose style heavily inspired Bright Falls.

  • Twin Peaks Town. When building the town of Bright Falls, Remedy took great inspiration from Twin Peaks, a 90s detective show created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. Connections between the game and show can be seen throughout the adventure, in its writing, artwork, buildings, characters and more. During a research trip early in the game's development, the art team also visited filming locations to capture the town's look and essence.

  • Oh Deer Diner Menu. In Alan Wake Remastered, the menu above the serving counter is legible. With the Oh Deer Diner, inspired by Twin Peaks' Double R Diner, there are some familiar items on the menu, such as the "Dreamy Cherry Pie". There are also three sizes of coffee appropriately described as "Large Coffee", "Extra Large Coffee" and "Insanely Large Coffee", with only a dollar between each.

  • The Lamp Lady. While Cynthia Weaver is often treated as a nuisance in Bright Falls, she is also known by others as The Lamp Lady and The Lady of the Light by those who recognise her importance. In Alan Wake, she is frequently seen cradling a gas lamp, mirroring the Log Lady from Twin Peaks, who carried a log and spoke to it.

  • Cauldron Lake Lodge. The style and placement of Cauldron Lake Lodge overlooking Cauldron Lake was inspired by The Great Northern Hotel from Twin Peaks. The real-life location is in Snoqualmie, Washington, and is called the Slish Lodge & Spa.

  • The Birds. As Alan attempts to return to the cabin after hearing Alice scream, he's surprised by an aggressive flock of birds swooping low towards him. While Remedy originally planned to include a wide range of animals in the game, including bears and wolves, development plans changed due to the workload involved. The birds were the exception. Not only did they have a closer connection to the game's story, but they also provided an alternative enemy type, demonstrating the Dark Presence's influence. In the game, moments involving the birds are sinister affairs, inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's film The Birds.

  • The Shining. When Alan rushes into the log cabin chased by an axe-wielding Stucky, Alan comments after the door is hit: "Any second now and Stucky would be knocking on the door with his axe like Nicholson in The Shining". The shot is similar to the iconic movie scene in which Jack corners his wife in the bathroom and begins to chop down the door separating them.

  • The Twilight ZoneNight Springs is inspired by the TV series, The Twilight Zone. Alan got his first gig as a writer on the show, honing his skills. The Twilight Zone is an anthology television series created by Rod Serling in 1959, featuring mysterious or disturbing events. Originally running for five seasons, the show has had three renewals in 1985, 2002, and 2019, as well as two movies. It's iconic for its narration, dramatic direction, unusual plots, and haunting theme. All episodes of Night Springs were written by Mikko Rautalahti, the writer for Alan Wake's American Nightmare.

  • Shadows Of Their Former Selves. In Alan Wake, the Taken will retain elements of their former hosts, with enemies spouting facts from their hobbies or work. An early example can be heard in Stucky's recommendation of Nordic Walking. Later, other Taken will reveal that their hosts were farmers or fishermen.

  • Nordic Walking. When Alan takes refuge in the Biltmore Logging Cabin, Stucky is heard outside calling, "During your stay, I recommend trying Nordic Walking. It's the latest thing. Incontestably proven health benefits let you kill two birds with one stone: you can see the sights and keep those cholesterol levels down at the same time." When Alan completes his journey through the woods, he will receive the "Nordic Walking" achievement. There will also be a poster in the gas station promoting the hobby.

  • Quantum Break. For Quantum Break, they said that the Night Springs show, Quantum Suicide, was a contributing influence. In the show, Dr Barclay Colvin demonstrates his machine that always guarantees that he cannot be killed by a specific gun; that each time he presses the trigger, an alternative reality is created where it is fired, but the machine guarantees that this one is the reality where he survives. Quantum Break uses alternative realities for junction points and maintains a fixed perspective on time travel: time is a straight line that cannot be altered.

Ties To Later Events
  • The Sudden Stop. The car crash at the start of the game forced the boot to unlock, spreading copies of Alan's latest book, The Sudden Stop, across the road. Promotion for this book will be found later in the form of a standee, with the book itself becoming an unusual bird-like enemy in the DLC expansions.

  • Night Springs. The nightmare takes place in the town of Night Springs. It's later revealed that Alan first got his big break as a professional writer on the Night Springs TV series, set in the town of the same name. In American Nightmare, a manuscript further explains that "Night Springs doesn't exist. It's a fictional town from the TV show I used to work on. It was Anyplace, USA, a place we used as a backdrop for whatever strange story we had that week."
  • Missing Posters of Alan Wake. An ominous sign, and a haunting prophecy. Later in the episode, Alan will come to behind the wheel of a crashed car with no memory of the past week. Though, it might have an even darker meaning, following the events of the game. In the final episode, Alan decides to venture back into The Dark Place determined to use the typewriter to save Alice, inevitably trapping him. The sequel picks up in real time, thirteen years after the original game, when the writer has been labelled missing and presumed dead.

  • "You're In This Story Now". The chilling words of the Hitchhiker are prophetic, with Alan Wake eventually writing himself into his own horror story, in a bid to save Alice.

  • "Deerfest is just two weeks away." Though it may seem like a passing worldbuilding comment at the time, Pat Maine informs the Wakes that they've arrived in Bright Falls at a great time, with Deerfest just two weeks away. Deerfest will play an important role in pacing the story, with the entire game taking place over that fortnight.

  • Hidden Intentions. In Barry's conversation with Alan, he asks if the vacation has "gotten his creative juices flowing". Unbeknownst to the writer, Alice had set up the trip to Bright Falls to help him get through his writer's block. While both Barry and Alice have a friendly but awkward relationship, with them feeling that the other is too controlling of their work. It's a little fuzzy as to what extent Barry knew of the true reason for the trip.

  • "Let's See Who Has the Last laugh." Alan will have his initial introduction of Ben Mott on the ferry heading to Bright Falls. Though he's easy to miss, he will be at the back of the ferry, dressed in camouflage overalls and wearing a baseball hat, a cigarette between his fingers. If Alan gets closer, he will hear Mott muttering to himself, calling the Wakes, "damn yuppies" and threatening "let's see who has the last laugh city boy." The threat comes true in the next episode, with him becoming a central character in Wake's story.

  • "Rusty here is no longer human." While those words spoken by Rose come from endearment at Rusty's love of the coffee blend at the Oh Deer Diner, the sentence also hints at Rusty's eventual transformation into a Taken in Episode 2

  • The Sudden Stop Cardboard Cutout. This handsome figure returns in Episode 4, taken by Barry Wheeler as snarky punishment for Rose's accidental betrayal.

  • Children of the Elder God. When Odin grabs Alan's attention at the Oh Deer Diner, asking him to put Coconut on the jukebox, Tor takes offence at his choices. Irritated by his request and feeling that it's an unsuitable track for a rocker, he states, "'Children of the Elder God', now there's a song for you." The song will be revealed in Episode 4, as Alan and Barry face off against the Taken at the Anderson farm.

  • "You Can Hurt Yourself In The Dark." As Alan ventures down the dark Oh Deer Diner corridor, Cynthia at at the entrance, warning him not to go in there. He pushes off the remark, stating that he can handle it. While it may initially seem like nyctophobia, her concerns have a different meaning once night falls. If Alan stays around, Cynthia tells him that "I warned Carl Stucky about it, but he didn't listen", foreshadowing his eventual transformation later in the episode, and that "darkness never sleeps."

  • Barbara Jagger's Outfit. An early indication that Jagger isn't quite who she seems, when she first appears seemingly out of nowhere at the back of the Oh Deer Diner, she is wearing a black mourning gown with a veil covering her face. The outfit would be the same one referenced in the Old Gods of Asgard Song, The Poet and the Muse, "In the dead of night, she came to him / With darkness in her eyes / Wearing a mourning gown / Sweet words as her disguise", implying she emerged from the Dark Place wearing it. At the end of the game, we see that her heart has been cut out, with a matching tear in the same dress.

  • "It's Been A Long Time, Tom." At the Oh Deer Diner, both Anderson brothers refer to Alan as Tom, saying it's been a long time but it was good to see him. Alan doesn't make any effort to correct them or comment on the name. Instead, he answers questions directed to him as "Tom".

  • "They'll Light Your Way." As the Wakes arrive at Diver's Isle, they listen to the local radio show by Pat Maine, which includes a message just for them, "And now the weather. It's going to be a clear night, so you folks from the big city might want to look up every once in a while, see those stars winking down at you. It gets pretty dark out here, but they'll light your way." While intended as friendly advice to stargaze, the tip later takes on a more sinister meaning.
  • Water Avoidance. When Alan sees the water below on his journey to the gas station, he comments, "I realised that I'd have to find a way across. I didn't even want to look at the water." A subtle hint of the time spent beneath Cauldron Lake during the missing week.

  • Lady of the Light. Cythnthia Weaver, instructed by Thomas Zane, was the individual behind he hidden stashes and light-sensitive messages.

  • "Paul Makes The Best Dogs". Though we won't see Paul Randolph until a later episode, Stucky will recite his favourite hot dogs from the cook and trailer park owner.

  • Page Adds Context. As Alan enters the garage at Stucky's Gas Station, the narration will state that "the garage was a mess. It looked like someone had trashed the place, or that there'd been some kind of fight. If you pick up the manuscript page next to the Deerfest float, you'll learn that it wasn't a fight of sorts; Stucky was in the garage when the Dark Presence took over him.

Ties Into The Remedy Connected Universe (Spoilers)
  • Tom the Poet. During the nightmare, Alan can discover the Tom the Poet poster on the back of the cabin door. In the original 2010/2012 version, the design is just a teaser of what's to come. In the Remastered, the poster has become a film poster for the Tom the Poet movie, "Written and Directed by Thomas Zane. Based on a Novel by Alan Wake. A Dark Place and Not A Lake Production." An early tease of the upcoming shift for the character, where he is a filmmaker and actor whose previous role was aas "Tom the Diver" that the diver was a character and not the artist.

  • "It's Been A Long Time, Tom." At the Oh Deer Diner, both Anderson brothers refer to Alan as Tom, saying it's been a long time, but it was good to see him. Alan doesn't make any effort to correct them or comment on the name. Instead, he answers questions directed to him as "Tom". In Alan Wake 2 and Control's AWE expansion, both he and Tom have the same face.

  • McCaffrey as the Guide. While the Remedy Connected Universe would be established almost a decade after the game was released, certain elements from Alan Wake connect retroactively. An early tie is James McCaffrey, who was likely cast to continue working with the actor after Remedy completed the Max Payne series, and as a nice surprise for long-time fans. McCaffrey would later take on the role of FBC Director Zachariah Trench in Control, and Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2, which would unfortunately be one of his last roles.  In both Alan Wake and Control, he would play a character who served as a guide, whose true intentions were more complex and secretive.

  • Both Wild and More Serene. While Quantum Break is not included in the RCU due to it being a Microsoft IP, there are still some connections. In his introduction, Tom recites a poem, "For he did not know that beyond the lake he called home lies a deeper, darker ocean green, where waves are both wilder and more serene. To its ports I've been." Quantum Break takes place in Riverport, featuring Paul Serene and Beth Wilder, both major characters. The game's Creative Director, Sam Lake, confirmed the connection ahead of the game's launch on Twitter.

  • The Labyrinth of Me. The phrase is frequently used in the Remedy Connected Universe. Originally used in an episode of Address Unknown in Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, credited to the writer Poole, it later appears as the title of a poetry book by Thomas Zane. In 2012, the phrase resurfaced in a poem discovered by Samantha, who moved to her dream house and discovered a shoebox filled with poems. More recently, it was uttered by Thomas Zane in Alan Wake 2

  • AHMA Sauna Lager. At Stucky's Gas Station and the Oh Deer Diner, Alan can find posters for AHMA Sauna Lager next to the door. The drink is introduced properly only in Alan Wake 2 and comes from a local brewery owned by the Koskela Brothers. In May 2024, Remedy collaborated with local brewery Tornion Panimo to bring AHMA Sauna Lager to life.

  • Scratch That. The song, Up Jumped The Devil plays at the end of the second radio show, Have You Seen This Dog? The game will later introduce "Mr Scratch", Alan's doppelganger, who will become the main antagonist in Alan Wake's American Nightmare and Alan Wake 2. Mr Scratch is an alternative name for the devil.
