How it Works: Quantum Break's AR Poster

For Quantum Break, this year's Gamescom was a big one with a live onstage demo, new gameplay footage, new screenshots, back to back interviews as well as demos introducing the public and gaming press to the protagonist's timepowers. For such a big event, the team partnered up with Fake to prepare an additional surprise.

Fake is a company based in Helsinki, Finland. They specialise in digital animation and illustration, and with their partners provides services for concept art, shoot supervision, 3D, 2D, compositing, editing, sound design and colour grading. They're also the team behind the incredible Quantum Break AR poster that some of you may have seen online or in person.

To anyone taking a normal photo of the poster or walking by it, it would look like exactly that, a poster. It's a rather striking poster, featuring a cargo ship closing in on a sturdy metal bridge as the sunlight peaks over the horizon. However point a phone with a specific app installed at it, and the boat literally leaps out of you. Through the lens you can see the various pieces of debris splintering off from the metal and helicopters surveying the ground.

Fake has recently posted up a small article describing how the technology worked and how it was used at the show. It's an interesting read, so make sure to check it out, HERE.

New Quantum Break TV Series Details (Gamescom)

Quantum Break was a big name at this year's Gamescom, and was definitely one to watch. On the first day, Sam and Ozz revealed a section of gameplay footage, live on the Microsoft stage. In the days that followed more information was posted online in the form of articles and interviews. One of the things I was personally hoping to hear more about, during the show, was the influence and impact that the television series aspect will have on the storyline and how it will blend into the game. Kotaku was similarly interested about this aspect and recently published an article on it.

The show hasn't been shot yet, but will be in the coming months, and more information about the filming will be released soon. Episodes of the live action series will be unlocked after junction moments. At the end of each level, the player will assume control of our protagonist Paul Serene, the head of Monarch, and will use his time power to choose a specific future to take place. The player will then be treated to an episode of the show, where they will see the impact of their decision and in turn receive further insight into the story. If you want you can also skip the live action episodes and return to them later, but they are designed to be consumed in the order they're unlocked.

An example of one of these junction moment choices is how Monarch deals with Jack publicly. One option would be to create a strong military operation, but that  may not be looked upon too kindly by the Riverport community. The other option could be an attempt to win over the residents by a PR cover up, which would paint Jack as the enemy.

For more information, check out the article at Kotaku, HERE.

IGN Talks to Sam Lake (Pre-Recorded Interview)

It's a brand new day at Gamescom! IGN recently caught up with Sam Lake (Creative Director at Remedy) to talk about Quantum Break's choices and the impact of those decisions as you progress throughout the game.

It's an interview which is definitely worth watching. It spans just two minutes, but it covers quiet a lot of information, especially on the player's choices and includes a nice message to fans of Remedy's previous games.

Today was pretty packed for the Remedy team at Gamescom. The doors were opened to the general public who got to have their first glimpse at the extended version of the Quantum Break demo. In addition to that, there were a number of interviews taking place with the developers throughout the day, so expect more videos shortly!

You might have seen Major Nelson's previous interview with Sam Lake (Creative Director at Remedy) which took place during the XBOX Briefing After Show. Today he had the opportunity to catch up with Sam again to talk about the title's story. This interview is focused more on the structure of the game such as the impact of the time stutters and how the choices the player makes influences events.

Gamescom Preview Roundup (Updated 28/8)

Yesterday the extended version of the gameplay demo was shown to the gaming press. Since then articles about the preview have been posted online across a number of gaming websites. Below is a collection of articles about this extended preview (and questions asked after the demo), as well as a video of the gameplay footage shown during the XBOX media conference, in case you haven't seen it yet.

I'll keep on updating this page with more previews as Gamescom goes on!

Quantum Break's live-action series will have branching stories to mirror your game
Polygon

"'You as a player get to explore those glimpses, and you get to make the decision as to which future will come to pass,' Lake said. 'You make that choice, and that is the reality that will happen. Right after that, we go into an episode of the live-action TV show, and the consequences of that come into play in your version of the show. You see that future happening. From that point onwards, the consequences carry on both on the show side and on the game side for the rest of the game.'"

Quanntum Break to feature interactive live action story-sequences
Digital Spy

"Both the game and the show ship on the same disc and are tied together in multiple ways that the player can affect with their choices," the creative director told Digital Spy at a behind-closed-doors meeting at gamescom 2014.

What You Didn't See After The New Quantum Break Demo
Game Informer

"The team will start shooting the live action television episodes that are spliced in between gameplay levels very soon. The episodes are targeting the 20 to 30 minute mark and will focus on the villainous Monarch corporation's side of the story. It'll be interesting to see how it all comes together next time we get a look at Quantum Break in action."

There's More to Quantum Break Than You Might Think
Gamespot

"Yesterday's gameplay premiere ended with a climactic fight on the bridge, but today's demo took things a few steps further. What followed was a sequence that focused on Jack's struggle to traverse through some truly harrowing stutters in time, moments when everything has frozen in place save for a few select objects. What made this scene interesting is that time froze just as a runaway barge came crashing into the bridge, sending the whole thing crashing down in a hailstorm of twisted metal and mangled concrete."

Quantum Break Looks Fun to Play, But Will it be Fun to Watch?
 IGN

"From the jaw-dropping ‘time stutters’ that freeze your surroundings, to the kinetic gun battles with enemies that go beyond Max Payne’s bullet dodging by allowing the player to catch bullets and hurl them back at enemies, to the jaw-dropping environmental effects that send ripples through concrete as though they were waves in the ocean. It’s a game seemingly designed to wow and bedazzle the player at every turn, and one that appears to push the Xbox One hardware like few games before it."

Remedy Explains How You Should Watch the Quantum Break TV Show
Kotaku

"Quite how Quantum Break's TV element is meant to work has been a bit of a mystery. The two are interlinked, and the show ships on the disc, but the finer details have been vague. Now, creative director Sam Lake has explained a little more."

Quantum Break - More Than Just Bullet Time and Television?
The Guardian

"Away from the combat, Joyce has to navigate his way through Stutters – pockets of space in which time has frozen still. Since the time in Stutters can stop and start at random, Joyce has to use his ability to freeze flying debris in mid-air to create pathways or clear a way forward. In the demo, one particularly spectacular set piece has a bridge being rammed by an oil tanker, forcing Joyce to assemble a series of platforms in order to save himself from a terminal fall into the bay."

Photos from the Gamescom Show Floor

Expanding on what was revealed during the XBOX media briefing, today focused more on showing the extended gameplay demo to the public and press on the show floor at Gamescom. (Expect a flood of articles tomorrow!) As the focus was on the event, there wasn't much in the way of new material for gamers following online, but many Remedy developers continued to tweet about their adventures and provide photos for those who couldn't be there in person.

Post-Briefing, Quantum Break Interview

Moments after the XBOX media briefing, gamers were treated to after show which focused more on some of the big announcements. You can't really have a show like that without talking about Quantum Break, and so Major Nelson caught up with Sam Lake (Creative Director) to ask him about the plans for the game and what gamers can expect to look forward to at Gamescom.

At the moment the aftershow hasn't been broken into easily accessible segments, but I will update this page when they do. In the meantime you can check out the interview HERE, on the XBOX conference recording at Twitch. The interview begins around the 02:29:35 mark.

Quantum Break Gameplay Premiere

Today we got our first glimpse at some Quantum Break gameplay... and by "glimpse" I mean over eight minutes of gorgeous footage. It showcases not only the combat, but also some of Jack's time powers, and enemies we can expect to face. It's SO good. The game was played live by Oskari Häkkinen (Head of Franchise Development at Remedy) with commentary provided by Sam Lake (Creative Director). It's nerdy, and you will love it.

This video kickstarts a week of Quantum Break goodness, and we'll be following Remedy's adventures throughout the show. Make sure to keep visiting back for more!

XBOX Briefing and Booth Details at Gamescom

Whether you're travelling to the show, or just following the news from the comfort of your own living room, there are a number of ways that you can follow Remedy's adventures during Gamescom. Our Community Manager, Lauri, has posted a quick message on the forums mentioning how you can stay updated:

XBOX Briefing!
Microsoft are holding a conference on Tuesday 12th August in which they will reveal new information regarding their upcoming games, and according to the post, this may be something you would want to check out! There may be a thing there. Perhaps. :)

The show will be broadcast on XBOX and Twitch. I will post links on here and our social media channels closer to the date, so stay tuned!

Attending the Show?
If you're travelling to the show, first of all bring water. Seriously. All of the water. Secondly you may want to check out the Remedy booth which will be located in the Microsoft area. Lauri will be one of the developers that will be at the show and he invites you to come by and say hello.

Original Post on the Remedy Forums. (Source)
Make sure to check out the Xbox briefing on Tuesday 12th of August (broadcast on Xbox and Twitch). And if you're lucky enough to actually attend Gamescom, come and say hi at our booth in the Xbox area!

I might not be there 24/7, but you'll recognize me as a tall disoriented dude wearing a Quantum Break / Remedy hoodie and wandering around the event area. And don't mistake me as the other tall dude wearing a similar hoodie, because he has a camera on his shoulder and there's a risk that you might end up in our making of footage.

New Official Quantum Break Screenshots

In addition to the Quantum Break Gameplay Teaser, Remedy has also released a handful of new screenshots from the game. The images show us a glimpse of some of the melee skills Jack has to defend himself throughout his adventure. He looks pretty badass! Honestly I think I might spend the entire game running up and punching people. The graphics look absolutely amazing, especially the character models, lighting effects and the destruction! We'll see more of the game in action at Gamescom. Check them out below:

The title is due out in 2015 and will be exclusive to the XBOX One.
