E3 Wrap Up / The Awards and Nominations Post

E3 is considered to be the Shangri-La of gaming, a place where new games are revealed and where the future of the industry is shaped. It's an amazing and an incredibly geeky event, but it isn't without its difficulties. Things such as "con-crash", heavier work demands, travel, and terrible internet. Access to wifi on-site is pricey and a little unpredictable, add on top of that a hectic schedule and there's only a couple of patches throughout the day to allow to you properly catch up on how the internet is reacting to your game.

With that in mind, a tradition I really love about events like E3 and Gamescom is how journalists show their love for games which interested them at the show. Awards and nominations are placed near the game's logo at their booth. And despite not having a playable demo and was shown to the press behind closed doors, Control received numerous plaques throughout the event.

Just some of the awards and nominations photographed include: GamesRadar+ (Best of E3 2018 Award), Monster Vine (Best of E3 2013), Game Informer (Best in Show Nominee), TechRaptor (Best of E3 2018), EveryEye.it (Best of the Show), PS Nation (Best of 2018), Hardcore Gamer (Best of E3 2018 Nominee), WorthPlaying (Best of E3 2018 Nominee), WorthPlaying (Best of E3 2018 Finalist), NewGameNetwork (Best of E3 2018 Winner), PCGamer (Best of E3 2018 Nominee), Twinfinite (Best of E3 2018), and Gamespot (Best of E3 2018 Winner)

Community Spotlight June Part 2 / Control Creations

Earlier this month, we featured a selection of amazing pieces of Control fan art for this month's Community Spotlight. Today we are back with a selection of new pieces uploaded or discovered since the article was posted. (If you haven't checked our earlier community post, click HERE to load it in a new tab. There's so many stunning projects there!)

Two years ago, we featured rmilo's beautiful Quantum Break artwork, including a handmade CFR. Since then her work has somehow been getting better and better with each piece. (Stop that lady, you're making the rest of us look bad!) Her style is both interesting and very much her own, giving each piece a lovely uniqueness.
Katerina is a name that you've probably have never heard of, having avoided the Remedy community since joining it years ago and having the "you can always tell a Milford man" reaction when discovered by fans in the internet wilderness.... okay in truth, Katerina (aka @SeaCat2401) is A) one of the most welcoming people you could ever meet, B) an enthusiastic and active artist and C) single handedly created the deviantArt page for all things Remedy. If you're looking for an encouraging, artistic community definitely make sure to check it out! I cannot recommend it enough.

Evil Owl Loki's work always makes me smile. From Max Payne to Jesse Faden, her detailed and impressive digital pieces of the Remedy protagonists have always made an impression on me. Her latest piece, inspired by Control is definitely no exception! Like Remedy, she does hauntingly beautiful looks incredibly well!
I had known rmilo, Evil-Owl-Loki and Katerina for a few years by this point, they're wonderful friends and artists, and definitely people to follow if you're active in the Remedy community. It's also really nice seeing artwork from talented artists I'm slightly less familiar with, making Kopf Stoff's recent tweet a really lovely surprise. The work is absolutely stunning with a gorgeous style and sense of space, everything about the piece beams with Control's themes, adding to that specialness.

While Twitter has been buzzing with new Control artwork, some beautiful pieces have been posted on the Official Remedy Forums. New forum member, havok, have been treating members and visitors to images inspired by the game's brutalist art design. So far there's been three haunting shots uploaded, and they're definitely worth a look! Click HERE for more!

Post-E3 2018 Wrap Up #2
[Our Final Control Wrap Up!] UPDATED 14/7!

It's been a pretty hectic past three weeks but today marks our sixth and final E3 2018 wrap up post for Control! It's been really nice following the coverage for the past few weeks and seeing the amount of international excitement from the gaming media and the community.

While this is our final E3 wrap up post, we might not have to wait long before the next wave of news with implications that the developers may be returning to the spotlight at Gamescom in August. Hopefully that will be the case! In the meantime, if you've missed any of our E3 coverage of the game, you can check it out on our event hub, HERE.

Our Final Interview Wrap Up....

Control - Remedy's Cinematic Metroidvania
     NVIDIA GeForce
"Remedy have outdone themselves this time. Control's graphics and animations look like they're from another decade! On top of the outstanding visuals, Remedy have decided to take a Metroidvania route with their game design this time 'round. Here's a quick look at what you can expect."

Control Will Be Weirder and Less Linear Than Quantum Break
     ComicBook.Org
"Lake continues by noting that another way Control will be different than Quantum Break – as well as its other previous projects – is that it will be less linear, less “holding the player's hand.” In fact, the way Lake describes the game, it almost sounds like something straight out of a Metroidvania playbook."

Eyes-On: Remedy’s Control will bend your mind
     TechnoBuffalo
"To give you an idea of the way things work in the Oldest House, one scene has Jesse performing a ritual in a huge storage room, only to find herself in a motel corridor. Spotting a black pyramid on one of the rooms’ doors, she goes to the front desk and grabs that room’s key. She opens the door to find a painting. She pulls on a string dangling from the ceiling and is now in the painting – on the other side of the painting."

E3 2018 Interview with Remedy’s Mikael Kasurinen on Control
     GamerEscape
"During our time at E3, we were able to sit down and get a look at Remedy’s upcoming game, Control. We saw gameplay of some of the areas seen in the announcement trailer. Afterwards, we had a chance to sit down with Remedy Game Director Mikael Kasurinen to ask him about Control and learn how its development is a bit of a departure from previous Remedy titles."

Control – Weapons, Story, Powers, DLC And More In Exclusive Interview
     Playstation Universe
"Last seen on the PS2 some fifteen years ago with Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, Control marks the return of Remedy Entertainment to the PlayStation fold (having toiled away exclusively on the Alan Wake and Quantum Break titles for Microsoft previously), and to hear more about one of the most exciting games of 2019 we spoke to Mikael Kasurinen, Game Director of Control."

We Talked to Control's Director About Refrigerators, John Wick, and Dogs. Oh, and the Game
     TechRaptor
"At E3 2018 I saw the trailer for Control during Sony’s press conference. Immediately I knew it’d be one of the most interesting games that I’d be seeing this year. Sure enough, I got to watch Remedy play through a demo of the game and enjoyed every second of it. From the weird twisting environment, the smart combat and powers, and a story that sounds totally insane in all the good ways. Thankfully I got to sit down with Mikael Kasurinen, the game’s director. He tells me about some of the gameplay decisions, the world design, the soundtrack, and more. Also we chat about dogs, John Wick, and the one IP he’d love to work on."

E3 2018 INTERVIEW: Remedy Games’ Mikael Kasurinen Talks Control
     Operation Rainfall
"One of the biggest surprises to come out of the PlayStation E3 2018 Showcase was Remedy Games’ upcoming game Control. Set in a building known as the Oldest House, Control stars Jesse Faden as the new Director of the Federal Bureau of Control who has to deal with the Hiss as they possess and invade the FBC. After viewing a playable game demo that was set midway through the game, I was able to sit down with Control‘s director, Mikael Kasurinen, and talk with him about what Control is as a game and the inspirations behind it, how Control is different from prior Remedy titles, and more."

...And Our Final Preview Wrap Up!

E3 2018 Control Impressions: Remedy Unleashed
     The Inner Circle Games Network
"In the game, the Federal Bureau of Control handles all mysterious or paranormal artifacts, keeping them away from an unsuspecting public. Their base of operation and the setting for the game, is the Oldest House. The Oldest House is a massive, labyrinth-like place that is biggest on the inside and is constantly shifting, with the rooms evolving and new paths emerging before the player’s eyes. Recently, the Bureau has been invaded by a mysterious force known only as the Hiss. The Hiss have strange powers, appearing to paralyze and possess different people, turning some of them into Drifters with dangerous abilities."

Control - First Look
     GameReactor UK
"The player is quickly introduced to the enemies of Control as Jesse walks by some bodies floating in the air, with one of them suddenly feeling the pull of gravity and hitting the floor in front of her with a heavy thump. The employee then proceeds to attack Jesse and she is forced to take him down with her - drum roll please - supernatural powers and equally supernatural handgun. We're told Jesse's service weapon is one that only bureau employees can wield and that Jesse can alter it for different combat encounters. We got to see two different modes used in the demo session, one regular handgun mode and one mode firing a round resembling a multi-target shotgun blast."

Control is Remedy's Most Exciting Project in Years
     Eurogamer
"The demo shown to press at E3 2018 is a proper peek at what everybody saw during the game's Sony conference trailer. You play as Jesse Faden (Courtney Hope, AKA Beth in Quantum Break), who like all Remedy protagonists is skilled in third-person shooting and physics manipulation while exploring dark, mysterious surroundings. These surroundings will host a big change for Control - a space to explore with a narrative path, but also side-missions and Metroidvania-inspired exploration. At one point in the demo we pass a series of prison cells, the unlucky occupant of one screaming for help. It's a side-mission which we can return to later."

E3 2018 Impressions — Control
     PlayerHUD
"Another of the interesting titles that we saw get the reveal out at this year’s E3 was Control from Remedy. It came at us all with a weird and unusual trailer, as was to be expected, and made a huge splash during the Sony conference where 505 Games opted to show it all off to the world. Maybe to hit home that their game was going to be on all platforms here or just the right place to unleash Control to the world. Either way, it was announced and slated to hit us in 2019 on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It also happened to have a bit more to show behind some closed doors during E3 and I had a chance to check it all out."

These Are Our Favorite Game Demos from E3 2018
     TechnoBuffalo
"Development on Control still has a ways to go, and we’re expecting 2019 at the very earliest, as Remedy games have a tendency to get delayed – but it’s always for the better. Whether we’re playing Control in 2019 or later, I have faith that it’s going to be a solid game and, hopefully, a return to form for the company after the detour into live action that was Quantum Break."

Control Will Make Remedy a Household Name
     Geek.com
"I got the chance to play many amazing games during this year’s E3. Unfortunately, one of them wasn’t Remedy’s upcoming Control. Announced during PlayStation’s press conference, the supernatural sci-fi action adventure game caught many of us by surprise. Though I wasn’t able to play it, I did get to see a 25-minute behind-closed-doors demo presented by the developers. From everything I’ve seen, this looks like another stellar title from the Remedy team. In fact, I believe this game will make the studio a household name."

E3 2018: Control Helped Remedy Concerns for Supernatural Shooters
     AppTrigger
"Our demo presentation started out with figurative hell breaking loose, with workers turned into mutations. Jesse starts with the ability to move objects around the offices, allowing her to grab a desk and throw them at enemies. You can also use your telekinetic powers to pick up debris and use it as a shield against projectiles. She is also capable of floating in the air and other seemingly magical abilities, most of which have not been showcased yet."

Control is a Drastic Change in Remedy’s Game Design While Staying True to Telling a Weird Story
     DualShockers
"For years, Remedy Entertainment has focused on narrative first and gameplay second. From the long monologues of Max Payne to the inner-workings of a writer in Alan Wake, and the episodic television experiment found in Quantum Break, it has been easy to see this emphasis on storytelling in almost every one of the studio’s titles. This focus on story over gameplay isn’t necessarily a negative but is just a design philosophy that one Remedy developer told me they’ve always kind of had at their studio."

UPDATED 30/6
Remedy’s Control Is Looking Like The Perfect Mix of Quantum Break And Alan Wake
     GamingBolt
"Remedy calls the environments “reactive,” avoiding all together the term “interactive.” They say “interactive” isn’t used because that would mean you can take down whole buildings and really destroy the game. But “reactive” allows the game to let Jesse select certain items from around the battle to use against her enemies. But she isn’t going over to the closest desk and throwing a stapler at her enemy. She uses a Force-like ability, something you’d see in Star Wars, where she grabs pieces of the floor and office debris around her and forms them into a makeshift shield used to block enemy fire. Her shield blocks what looks like all of the shotgun fire from the oncoming crazy-looking man. She also grabs an office chair, that she uses to toss at the enemy to kill him instantly."

A First Look At Remedy's New Game: Control
TLDR (Too Long Didn't Read) Games
"During the 15 minutes hands-off demo shown to us behind closed doors at E3, the team from Remedy introduced us to Control‘s protagonist, Jesse Fadden, the newly appointed Director of the Federal Bureau of Control. While there is indeed more to find out about precisely what this bureau does, it quickly became clear that they’re in charge of dealing with the supernatural. Jesse herself possesses certain powers, which will be upgradable as players progress through the story."

Post-E3 2018 Wrap Up #1
[Interviews w. Sam Lake, Anna Megill, Thomas Puha, Mikael Kasurinen, & Sergey Mohov]

It's been about a week since E3 drew to a close, and while we had a lot of Control-related news throughout the event, there's been a long list of new additions these past few days.

There's been a flood of new interviews with developers such as Sam Lake (Creative Director), Anna Megill (Narrative Lead), Thomas Puha (Head of Communications),  Mikael Kasurinen (Game Director) and  Sergey Mohov (Game Designer). And there's also been a variety of new demo articles discussing everything from the constantly-shifting house to Jesse's firearm.

Check out our collection of new articles from the past week:

We have New Interviews...

E3 2018: Sam Lake of Remedy Entertainment Takes A Deep Dive into Control
     Newegg Studios
"JC Bagnell talks to Sam Lake, Creative Director of Remedy Entertainment, to get some insights into the mysterious world of Control, the newest game from the studio. Control is a supernatural action game in the "new weird" genre, and looks to be an evolution of the Alan Wake style of spooky storytelling combined with intense action mixing gunplay with mystical abilities. Lake talks about the origins of the world, the nature of the game's protagonist Jesse, and why Remedy is making a more open-ended and sandbox style of game after all these years."
What Is Remedy's Latest Game, Control? - E3 Live 2018

     GameSpot
"We sit down with Mikael Kasurinen from Remedy to dissect Control’s fascinating world."

Remedy Hints That 'Control' Could Be Their First Foray Into Games-As-A-Service
     GameDaily.biz
“Instead of just doing this one linear story that just starts and it ends and you're done — we wanted to turn that around a bit and start with the actual world,” Kasurinen continued. “What is the world that we want to create? We started talking to Sam about the house, what kind of location it is, how it keeps shifting its shape — it’s somehow larger on the inside than it is on the outside. It looks like a normal building, but once you go in, it seems to infinitely expand into all directions.”

Remedy Doubles Down on Narrative Gaming with Control
     VentureBeat
"One of the pleasant surprises at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) game trade show last week came from Alan Wake developer Remedy Entertainment and publisher 505 Games. They announced the cross-platform game Control, a supernatural third-person action-adventure game. It’s a big investment in a new franchise and one that emphasizes the single-player experience that other companies are talking about avoiding."

‘Control’ Was Inspired by the New Weird of ‘Annihilation,’ Themes of ‘Alan Wake’
     Variety
"'What if this is the ocean?' It was a thought I couldn’t get out of my head after watching a short demo of Remedy Games’ upcoming action game rife with elements of new weird fiction, magic realism, and supernatural surprises. While 'Control' is clearly meant to be its own thing, an entirely new creative work birthed by the team at Remedy Games, its key conceit brought to mind the ending of 2010’s 'Alan Wake,' in which the protagonist of the psychological thriller utters a confounding last line: 'It’s not a lake — it’s an ocean.'"

Remedy's Sam Lake Opens Up About Having The Freedom To Be Weird Again
     GameSpot
"As discussed in an earlier article, the demo I saw was beautiful, haunting, and filled with strangely alluring touches that beg for explanation. During my interview with director Mikael Kasurinen, he compared Control's atmosphere to that of Annihilation, a book (and a Netflix film) that purposefully obscures cause-and-effect dynamics to keep you guessing. Shortly after the demo, I also had the chance to speak with Sam Lake, the creative director at Remedy who's had a long and interesting career working on Max Payne, Alan Wake, and prior to Control, Quantum Break."

How Remedy Entertainment's Control Is Not Like Quantum Break
     COGConnected
"Many spectators from home would agree, Sony’s E3 press conference lacked pizzaz and stumbled after the first bit; but it recovered. Every reveal gave us actual gameplay, and Remedy’s Control was among them. Originally nicknamed P7, Control bears many visual similarities to Quantum Break (Remedy’s Xbox One exclusive), similarities that fans noticed. Thus, Thomas Puha, Head of Communications at Remedy, explained how the IP is different."

Control E3 2018 Interview With Remedy’s Mikael Kasurinen: Metroidvania, SCP Influences, Single Player Only
     Wccftech
"Remedy Entertainment’s upcoming project, titled Control, was first revealed during Sony’s E3 showcase last week. This third-person paranormal shooter drew a lot of inspiration from their previous works, especially Quantum Break. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Mikael Kasurinen, Game Director on Control, to discuss some of the inspiration behind Remedy Entertainment’s latest multiplatform project and what fans can expect from their time spent within the Bureau."

Read Mikael's interview with Wccftech, HERE.

Control is a ritual-obsessed, supernatural action game from the creator of Quantum Break
     The Verge
"For the past few years, Remedy Entertainment has toyed with different ways to tell its stories. Its thriller game Alan Wake played out through episodic installments, not unlike a TV show. Sci-fi action-adventure game Quantum Break took the idea of television more literally, with a live-action series grafted on to a game. If players expect the developer’s latest game, Control, to follow in these more experimental footsteps, however, they’re in for a surprise. “With Control, we’re focusing on other ways of telling stories,” says game designer Sergey Mohov. Rather than toying with the conventions of television, it will be a game focused on environmental storytelling, and the missions that players embark on will be more than just linear fetch quests."

...And New Previews!

Everything We Learned About Remedy's Control At E3 2018
     Screenrant
"From Control's E3 trailer, gamers gathered that the game will feature quite a few supernatural elements as well as yet another deep narrative created by legendary video game writer and artist Sam Lake (co-founder of Remedy Entertainment). Plus, the main character's gravity-bending powers, not to mention the artistic style of the game, gives the title an edge over other third-person action-adventure games. And that's something that we learned more about at E3."

Check out Screenrant's Control preview, HERE.

Watch Us Discuss Why Control Was One Of Our Favorite Games At E3
     GameInformer
"In this excerpt from The Game Informer Show podcast, Ben Hanson, Kyle Hilliard, Kimberley Wallace, and Brian Shea talk about seeing the behind-closed-doors gameplay demo for Control from Remedy and how it compares to Quantum Break."

Watch their discussion on the GI site, HERE (archived).

E3 2018: CONTROL is What Happens if David Lynch Would Have Made Max Payne
     ComicsBeat
"Control's mood is what happens if Twin Peaks and Die Hard took place in the same universe. In the demo we were shown, Jesse is trapped in the building and tasked to find a man named Rooney. Jesse finds herself searching the office building full of flickering fluorescent lights, randomly floating bodies and an audio design that trumps some of the best horror movies ever made."

Control Makes Government Work Cool Somehow
     COGConnected
"Jesse approaches her work with the resignation of someone duty-bound. This cosmic nightmare is her responsibility to correct, and she’s resolute in her focus on the task. This focus, in combination with the constant influx of bizarre arcane forces, creates a fascinating narrative that I’m eager to investigate in greater detail. The possibilities contained within The Oldest House are more or less limitless, with the space inside capable of shifting in world-shattering ways. I’ll be waiting on pins and needles for more information on Control in the days to come."

Read COGConnected impressions, HERE.

Control’s Haunted Dream Prison Looks Pretty Stunning
     PCGamesN
"Control is set in a severe New York City building called The Oldest House, and the reveal trailer shows it shifting and rearranging itself around protagonist Jesse Faden, who carries a pistol that seems to be doing the same thing. The structure is the home of the Federal Bureau of Control, which apparently specializes in surveillance and non-Euclidean geometry."

Remedy’s Control Offers a Supernatural Take on 1984, with Metroidvania Elements and Shape-Shifting Buildings
    GamesRadar+
"For a long time, Remedy’s new game has been known only as P7, but what’s now known as Control is shaping up to be quite the intriguing third-person shooter. It turns out that actually the word shape has quite a lot to do with what makes Control look quite so interesting, especially when it comes to the locale and the weaponry you’ll have at your disposal."

E3 2018 Preview: Control Dives into the Depths of the New Weird
     Playstation Lifestyle
"Needless to say, excitement is quite high for Control, Remedy’s newly revealed third-person action-adventure mystery. Players will become Jesse, the newly minted Director of the Federal Bureau of Control. This secretive government agency is tasked with handling the supernatural and the weird, but there are clearly a lot of other secrets present that Remedy isn’t ready to reveal quite yet. Jesse’s appointment to the Director’s seat is also shrouded in mystery right now, but along with it comes a bunch of really cool abilities and a shapeshifting gun, so it can’t be all bad, right?"

Community Spotlight: The Community's Control Creations

Since it's reveal last week, Control has gotten quite a bit attention from the international gaming community. While the media has been covering the game and reveals from the show floor, fans have been celebrating the announcements from home. Some have put thoughts to words through their blogs, others posted their opinions on social media, and for some they've picked up their tablets or pencils to create stunning fan art.

Here's a collection of some of the amazing creations that have been posted by the Remedy community in response to Control's reveal.

Long time Remedy fan, Patrick from PayneReactor has created a specialised hub for the game on his website. The hub features a lot of information on the title including official screenshots, story information, trailers, interviews and more.

In other fansite news, our friends at ComunidadRemedy also wrote an in-depth post announcing the reveal on their website, compiling everything we know so far. You can check it out below:

We also have a wonderful trove of fan art including this beautiful piece by Carla, featuring all of the Remedy protagonists responding to Jesse Faden's recent arrival. This was one of the first pieces of Control artwork posted just a few hours after the trailer went live.

Toey makes incredibly cute fan art, and the latest piece, inspired by Control's arrival, is definitely no exception. Like Carla, Toey's Jesse crashes into the piece taking Max, Alan, and Jack by surprise. Their reactions are gold.

If you're active in the Remedy community, chances are that you've already heard about Katerina (also known by her username @SeaCat2401). She's a wonderful person who has created the deviantArt page, RemedyEntertainment, a group which celebrates the artistic creations of the fandom. In tribute to Control's reveal, she's created a dedicated folder for the game and created her own special piece.

Another fan quick after the reveal was cosplayer Emme-Gray, who created the first Control cosplay, portraying Jesse in a perfect photoshoot. It's great to see her cosplaying Remedy games again, after her Alan Wake and American Nightmare projects a few years ago. For more of her work, make sure to check out her deviantArt page!

Melissa (also known as melfpic) is also an incredibly active fanartist in the community, producing a wonderful series of digital artwork inspired by Quantum Break. Recently she turned her attention to Control with another gorgeous piece.

Another great piece of Control fan art on Instagram is made by Isidora (username, ette_lette) showcasing Jesse's shield telekinetic ability. The piece is both stylised and stylish with a perfect use of the game's colour scheme.

Speaking of stylised pieces, AG's (@ag_aagee on Twitter) Control artwork is beautifully bold with eye-catching reds and blacks in a faithful lineart sketch of the protagonist. Jesse looks so good!

Our final spotlighted piece for today comes from Greg (@grigouips on Twiter) whose stunning Jesse-inspired piece is part of a collage featuring Amicia from A Plague Tale: Innocence, and Ellie from The Last of Us II in tribute to E3 2018's heroines.

If you've created Control fan art, let us know! We'd love to feature it! You can get in contact through email at jadenmorretti@yahoo.com, on our Facebook page (TheSuddenStop), or our Twitter account (@TheSuddenStop).
