When work began on Control, the team drew inspiration from Jeff VanderMeer's highly praised Southern Reach series to establish the tone of the game. The first three books in the series were published just years earlier in 2014, and focused on a secret agency known as Southern Reach as they monitor and conduct expeditions into a place known as Area X, an uninhabited and abandoned coastal area of an unnamed country reclaimed by nature.
While they drew inspiration from a range of different sources and mediums, Southern Reach was the name given first in interviews. There are four books in the series: Annihilation, Authority, Acceptance, Absolution, and Abdication.
