Today is the final day of voting for The Horror Game Awards 2025, a community driven awards ceremony hosted by Lost In Cult. This year marks their third event, with a familiar name is nominated for The Lifetime Achievement Award, Remedy's Creative Director, Sam Lake.
The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates international contributions to the horror genre and of video games, spotlighting individuals who help lead and champion projects.
Sam is alongside names such as Al Yang (Director of Silent Hill f), Hideo Kojima (Writer and Director of Death Stranding), J.T. Petty (Writer of Outlast), Keiichiro Toyama (Writer and Director of Silent Hill), Kim Macaskill (Writer on Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League), Mike Mika (Industry Veteran, +190 shipped titles), Puppet Combo (Developer of Stay out of the House and Murder House), Ryukishi07 (Writer on Silent Hill f), Scott Cawthon (Writer and Director of Five Nights at Freddy's), Shinji Mikami (Producer on Resident Evil), Thomas Grip (Developer and Co-founder of Frictional Games, Amnesia: The Dark Descent), and Zeekers (Developer of Lethal Company).
For Sam, he joined Remedy back with Death Rally, originally adding a story in any available space to create a more grounded experience. When the company set their sights on Max Payne, Lake joined as their writer, a role that he has held and expanded ever since.
He has worked on Death Rally (Writer), Max Payne (Writer & Actor), Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (Writer), Alan Wake (Lead Writer), Alan Wake's American Nightmare (Creative Director), Quantum Break (Creative Director), Control (Creative Director), and most recently Alan Wake 2 (Creative Director & Actor). Alongside his extensive role at the company which involves oversight from the story, to influences and the music, he has also been a regular representative of the development teams for international events over the past three decades. Also, importantly, he's a genuinely nice guy.
Of course, with awards like this we should mention that game development is about team work and there are so many wonderful and talented developers working on the projects above. Spotlighting individuals is tricky, each game is a vast project and game development is a miracle at times, which is why when anyone at Remedy is nominated, we want to show them love.
