Some extra FBC: Firebreak news for the week! Alongside yesterday's 1.7.1 update which brought voice chat to the adventure, a new Steam post provided a glimpse into the next major update for Firebreakers.
Due to now launch in January, the Rogue Protocol Major Update tasks the bravest of the brave to take on the Endless Shift. “As the influence of the Hiss continues to rise across the Oldest House, multiple sectors are nearing collapse. Inside these dangerous and infected places, nothing is immune to the chaotic warping caused by the corruption, not even Firebreak. Firebreakers are sent into these sealed arenas and tasked with holding the line for as long as they can - an assignment known as an Endless Shift.”
Perhaps the toughest challenge we've had in the game so far, the Endless Shift, throws Firebreakers into a sealed area where waves of enemies converge on your position, getting strength with each round. If you enjoyed Alan Wake's American Nightmare's Fight Til Dawn mode, this is one for you! After each wave, you and your team will collect Corruption, “a strange residue left behind by defeated enemies”. (Sounds unhygienic.) This can be spent between rounds to unlock upgrades, weapons, and upgrades, allowing you to face the next stronger onslaught.
While the dev team were initially hoping to have the next update's release to coincide with the voice chat being brought to the game, ultimately they've decided to delay the next major update until January 2026. For developers, having extra time, particularly at the end of a project, can help make the update's rollout smoother and can avoid crunch at some studios. Honestly, anything that gives some extra breathing space and promotes a work/life balance, we are in favour for! And it's a great way to kickstart the year, particularly when January feels like an endless shift all on its own.
For the Rogue Protocol Major Update, the extra two months will allow the team to polish the game and make changes to the balance, ensuring that the final product is as strong as it can be.
