Over the years, we've spoken about the inspirations that Remedy have drawn upon while building their games such as Twin Peaks, True Detective, and Stephen King... but recently THE TABLES HAVE TURNED. The writer for the upcoming Big Finish Doctor Who audio drama, Fallen Heroes, has named Alan Wake 2 as a source of inspiration for the story.
Fallen Heroes is a three part audio series created and published by Big Finish. While the studio is best known for its Doctor Who adventures, they have also worked on a number of series including The Prisoner, The Avengers, and Blake's 7 over its twenty-five-year history.
On approaching the next series, writer Alfie Shaw reveals, “The inspiration for this set was stuff like True Detective and Alan Wake 2. Yes, there’s a murder to be solved, but the focus is more on how the crime affects those caught up in it rather than a Christie-style whodunnit. I really wanted it to almost not be Doctor Who, and the fact it must become Doctor Who again is part of what messes things up for everyone.”
Fallen Heroes will be set on the planet Falk, and focuses on a murder in the small, quaint coastal town of Oakview. Two Galactic Investigation Bureau agents have been sent to investigate the crime and possible connections to the Clock Face Killer.
If you're not familiar with the details of Doctor Who, let's do a quick recap! (Good lordy, my primary school self has been preparing for this moment!) For the show's 50th anniversary, the TV writers introduced “The War Doctor”, a incarnation which took place between the eighth (Paul McGann) and ninth doctors (Christopher Eccleston). This version was involved in the devastating Time War, a long-lasting battle between Gallifrey and Skaro which had implications and casualties across several galaxies. Originally played in the show by John Hurt, the War Doctor has since been performed by Jonathon Carley in audio plays following his sad passing. Fallen Hero will be part of the new The War Doctor Rises series, released in May 2025.
