Alan Wake Remastered's Third Anniversary

Today marks three years since Alan Wake Remastered launched worldwide! Developed in collaboration with d3t, the project saw the adventure brought to modern machines, including PlayStation for the first time.

While it was unknown at the time, the release marked the first step in Remedy's return to the Alan Wake series, with work beginning on the sequel two year earlier. With ten years separating the releases, the developers decided upon acquiring the publishing rights from Microsoft and working with an exterior partner on a remaster. Returning to the story with fresh eyes provided the opportunity to improve on several areas that original deadlines prevented, and reach a new audience.

It's a title that is pretty close to our hearts, as surprisingly as we were given permission to reveal it. Writing on The Sudden Stop, Sam Lake (Remedy's Creative Director) explained the studio's approach, "Alan Wake Remastered is the original experience you fell in love with all those years ago. We did not want to change that. But the visuals all around, including the character model of Alan Wake himself and the cinematics, have been updated and improved with some choice next-generation upgrades."

To celebrate the anniversary, we reached out on Twitter to ask how you discovered the Alan Wake series. We heard from 370 wonderful players, and this is what you said...

ACE LACSONWatched a playthrough of it back in 2010 and have been a fan ever since!

JasonWas exposed to the War music video way back when but never picked up the game, it wasn't until after I played control in 2020 and found the hidden manuscript page that I realized who it was and went back to play the og.

RSBI’m an OG OG Alan Wake fan who was waiting to play the game since 2005!!!

Alpha AquilaeGot an Alan Wake code with Quantum Break and decided to play the older game first!

miss viviI was the only guy who showed up for the midnight release at my local game store!!

MorryFascinating results! It really shows you how some older games could benefit greatly from a remaster / remake. With the Max Payne remake in the pipeline, it's going to be fun to introduce a whole new generation to that series, too.

Ian "Meme" MalcolmQuick question: Why does music start playing in my head the moment i read that sentence “My name is Alan Wake. I'm a writer."  … yeah that tune, that Alan Wake theme one.

Aaron: Started with Remastered.

A.Wake: I’ve played AW countless times on Xbox 360 and One since July 2010. Still playing it (in crisp Xbox SX graphics, with the FPS boost and auto HDR). Funnily, I haven’t unlocked all the achievements yet because I always get carried away by the story and forget about the rest.

Aymen 451: It was on the back of my Xbox 360 box so I went and bought it after seeing that screenshot and loved it ever since

Mikes Richards (not that one, or that one): Picked up the collector's edition day one. I had no idea who Remedy was, barely aware of Max Payne. I didn't get a whole lot of games right at launch back then cause I was like 16 with limited cash, but it just looked so unique and interesting I had to take a chance on it.
