Alice is a professional photographer and the wife of Alan Wake. She struggles with nyctophobia, a fear of the dark, a fear that makes her cautious and prepared.
Before Bright Falls
In the hopes that it would help with his Writer's Block, Alice arranges the vacation to Bright Falls after Alan stumbles home at two in the morning, drunk, following his latest book tour for The Sudden Stop. The following day, the couple had a fight, with Alice frustrated at her husband's lack of consideration, and Alan frustrated with the pressure of his work. With their annoyances out in the open, the two make up, promising to take a holiday somewhere special, and just them, once work eases up.
She booked a cabin next to the lake, rented out by local mechanic Carl Stucky. Ahead of the vacation, she had reached out to local psychiatrist, Dr Emil Hartman, after reading his book, The Artist's Dilemma. Unbeknownst to Alan, she packs his typewriter and a pad of paper, in case Alan is later inspired by the lakeside retreat.
Entering Bright Falls
As the ferry approaches their destination, Alice wakes up her husband and takes a final few moments on deck photographing the coast as it draws into view. She needles Alan to introduce himself to a friendly-looking gentleman, Pat Maine, who describes her as "lovely" and welcomes them to the town. With the ferry docking, they make it back to their car, and she drives them to the Oh Deer Diner, dropping Alan off to collect the keys, while she picks up some flashlights from a local store.
With the keys and instructions, they drive to their new cabin, listening to the local radio station along the way. During sunset, they reach their destination, the Bird Leg Cabin out on Diver's Isle. After the generator is started, she enters the cabin and begins unpacking.
As the sun sets, she takes advantage of the golden skies and lines up a shot through the viewfinder, in awe of the sights. She notices a figure standing in the shadows behind the cabin of an elderly woman in a black dress. When she lowered the camera, the figure had disappeared, leaving just a selection of plants that might have been the cause.
After unpacking, Alice calls her husband in from the garden, with the promise of a surprise awaiting him in the upstairs room. As he steps in, his voice sharp as he sees the typewriter at the desk, she reveals her hopes for the trip, that the change of scenery might do him good and inspire his writing. His frustrations resurface, leading him to storm out as the cabin's lights flicker.
As Alan catches his breath on the bridge to Diver's Isle, Alice is dragged through the cabin and hauled over the side by Barbara Jagger. She screams, just moments before she is plunged under the cold waves.
